Over the past few decades, sustainable development has become a familiar buzzword all around the world. The Québec government is doing its part by adopting its own original approach.
The ministère des Transports (MTQ) jumped on board, first and foremost by promoting sustainable mobility throughout Québec. The mobility of people and goods lies at the very heart of economic development and is a mainstay of social integration and participation, while also having an influence on the environment.
The MTQ therefore intends to ensure a safe, integrated, and lasting transportation system that meets current and future user needs, spurs trade, and respects the support capacity of ecosystems. Improving sustainable mobility will therefore be a major boon to Québec as a whole.
Since the MTQ has one of the biggest staffs in Québec’s civil service, the potential impact of all employees rallying around sustainable development is huge.
Constantly Evolving Commitment
The MTQ has been committed to sustainable development for a number of years now. It is constantly bolstering its efforts to better integrate the presentation of our ecological, cultural, and social heritage, and its many achievements are tangible proof that its concerns have borne fruit.
In the current context, the MTQ believes the time is ripe to renew this commitment and step up efforts to meet the challenges of sustainable mobility, thereby contributing to the government’s ongoing approach by using the transportation sector as a means of bringing about sustainable development in Québec.
Solid Foundations
The MTQ’s 2008–2012 Strategic Plan underscores the importance it gives to sustainable development by setting out the concept in its mission statement and adapting it to the transportation sector : « Ensure the sustainable mobility of people and goods throughout Québec via safe and efficient transportation systems that contribute to the province’s development. »
In order to back its commitment to sustainable development, the Ministry has drawn up two documents that provide solid foundations for its approach:

Collaboration, consultation, and cooperation are key to the Ministry’s activities. Mindful of the social acceptability of the projects it undertakes, the MTQ strives to meet the needs of the community by taking sustainable mobility into account.
Indeed, the MTQ’s work with public, broader public, and private partners—be it for direct action or awareness campaigns—has proven how valuable cooperation can be. The ministry intends to continue to pursue efforts to combine sustainable mobility and development by encouraging its partners and the general public to play an active role.
