School bus transportation for students is organized by school boards or other establishments. To do so, they determine eligibility requirements for transportation (walking distances, dangerous zones, etc.). Generally speaking, transportation is provided by private companies.
While funding for school bus transportation falls under the ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport, the ministère des Transports is responsible for overseeing safety in this area. It therefore ensures compliance with vehicle standards and the use made of these vehicles. Lastly, in 1993, the Ministère established a compulsory training program for school bus drivers that includes upgrading every three years. These courses are given by the Centre de formation du transport routier (CFTR) Saint-Jérôme and the Centre de formation en transport de Charlesbourg (CFTC).
