Under exceptional circumstances, the Minister of Transport will issue special travel permits in accordance with the powers conferred by Article 633 of the Highway Safety Code. These permits authorize vehicles of non-standard loads or dimensions and are issued primarily to allow experimental vehicles to travel, or to harmonize our standards with those of other North American administrations, or to give industry time to adapt itself to special situations.

Before submitting an application, we suggest you take a look at a specimen of the permit you wish to obtain. Be sure your vehicle complies with conditions for delivery of the desired permit. When applicable, fees include 10$ service charges. Starting January 2011, service charges will be of $10.10. These are the types of special permits issued by the Minister:

The permit application form can be used for up to 10 applications for the same type of permit. It takes 3 working days to process an application. Permits are sent by e-mail or by regular mail.

Your safety rating will be verified before a special permit is issued.

Only owners of heavy vehicles (from Québec and the US) that are registered with the Commission des transports du Québec and that have a satisfactory safety rating may apply for permits online. All others must apply by mail. Please visit the Commission des transports du Québec website in order to check your rating.

For the time being, owners of heavy vehicles that are registered elsewhere in Canada or that are registered under the National Safety Code may apply for permits online without providing their registration number.

Payment can be made by any of the following credit cards:

When it is time to pay you will be automatically directed to the Online P@yment ^tm governemental service site.

Payment by Cheque

If you wish to pay by cheque, print the completed application form and send it with your cheque payable to the ministre des Finances du Québec to the following address:

Modifications are free of charge. Send a copy of the special permit with the desired modifications by fax to 418 528-5670.

All you need to do is fax a copy of the special permit at (418) 528-5670 mentioning you wish to cancel it.  If the case arises, no refund will be made seven days after the effective date of the special permit. Please note that service charges applicable to each permit delivered are not refundable.

On the deadline date, the Minister reserves the right to suspend renewal of special permits.

• Permits without cost
  Otherwise, permits are renewed automatically at the end of each year.
• Permits with cost
  Special permit owners must submit a new application of  the special permit within 30 days of the date of expiry of their current permits.
