May a 16-year-old drive a snowmobile or an all-terrain vehicle?

Yes, the minimum age is 16. However, a provision under the Act respecting off-highway vehicles in force since June 13, 2006   stipulates that young people of 16 and 17 years of age must hold a certificate of competency issued by an agency authorized by the government (Fédération des clubs de motoneigistes du Québec).

Do I have to have a driver's licence to drive an off-road vehicle?

When crossing a public highway with an off-road vehicle the person driving must have a driver's licence. A Class 6D licence for a moped is sufficient.

The driver's licence, issued by the Société de l'assurance automobile (SAAQ), does not replace the certificate of competency which is mandatory for young people 16 and 17years of age. The class 6D driver's licence, which is mandatory for young people 16 and 17 years of age, allows only the crossing of public ways.

Does an off-road vehicle need to be registered?

Yes. A registration certificate can be obtained from the SAAQ.

Does an off-road vehicle need to be insured?
Menu.

Yes. Under the law, the owner of an off-road vehicle must have at least $500 000 in liability insurance.
